Transformation of the anarchic dumping on the riversides of the seasonal dry streams (oueds) into green spaces in Tataouine (Tunisia)


After many years, the notion of the seasonal dry stream at Tataouine is tied to a very negative image by the presence of different types of waste: agro-alimentary, from construction sites, solid and liquid waste generating unpleasant odors. In conclusion, the seasonal dry stream represented an image of poverty and a source of diseases.

Due to the large number of inhabitants by the riversides of the seasonal dry stream and the high cost of its cleansing during the year, «since there are two  seasonal dry stream crossing the city of Tataouine», the municipality has prepared a strategy to transform the riversides of the seasonal dry streams of Tataouine and Elghamah into green spaces, by becoming public gardens and parks with the aim to reduce the risk of diseases and to improve the life quality of the citizens. It will be done conserving the riversides in order to maintain a normal flow, avoid overflows and eliminating obstacles to the hydraulic section.

Every year, during the celebration of the ‘National Tree Day’, the municipality of Tataouine prepares a special zone at the riversides of the seasonal dry stream (cleaning, levelling and delimitating the  selected area…) to plant a large number of trees and plant together with the participation of the civil society.

This experience consists in:

  • Enhance the value of the free spaces around the seasonal dry stream.
  • Establish green areas for the benefit of the citizens living in the riversides of the seasonal dry stream.
  • Fight against black spots and anarchic dumping.

Planting vegetation at the riversides of the seasonal dry stream helps the fixation of the soil and avoids the effects of erosion and the enlargement of the seasonal dry stream that could threat the safety of the nearby buildings.

In conclusion, such a process of regeneration gives stability and security to the zones of intervention, and provides a better urban environment that will also serve as a forest reserve thus contributing to the fight against climatic changes.
