This new cooperation agreement with CAT-MED Platform, through the Malaga City Council, Urban Environmental Observatory (OMAU), seeks to establish synergies, in the MED and EU context, that promote the implementation of smarter integrated urban models and more sustainable and socially inclusive cities, based on the Mediterranean city model.

The main objectives of the agreement are as follows:

  • Preservation of biodiversity, promotion of energy efficiency and savings, climate change mitigation and approaches to fight against social inequality and vulnerability.
  •  The integrated urban development actions are defined as strategic tools to improve and to address the challenges on social and territorial cohesion, while archiving smarter, more sustainable and socially inclusive urban models, by implementing the objectives of the Europe 2020 Strategy.
  •  To promote the role of cities as engines of the economy, places where to impulse creativity connectivity, innovation and, as genuine Living Labs, giving room to experiment and work proposals in order to improve the quality of life of its citizens with his direct participation.

CAT-MED is a Platform for sustainable urban models launched in May 2009 and it is integrated by 28 partners. The main aim of CAT-MED, is the development of sustainable urban models which are based on the classical Mediterranean city; compact, complex and where the proximity of public services is determined by people’s ability to access them on foot. The project is developing a system of common indicators and has carried out a pilot experience which involved the planning and design of the Green Apple. The project represents a symbol of territorial, social and technological cohesion, promoting participation and public debate through the launch of a platform for Mediterranean cities.
