On May 4th and 5th , the Centre for Mediterranean Integration hosted the seminar “Addressing the Challenges of Territorial Cohesion and Promoting the Role of Cities in the MENA Region”. This seminar was organized by the different institutions of the Urban Hub of the CMI, including MedCities, the World Bank, Cities Alliance, GIZ, AFD, EIB, CODATU, AVITEM and UCLG.

Around forty experts and policy-makers of the region gathered together to discuss the challenges of territorial cohesion in the region. A part from the General Secretariat, three members of the network participated in the discussions: Saida, represented by Mr. Mustapha Hijazi (Council Member) the Union of Municipalities of Dannieh, represented by its President Mr. Mohammad Saadieh and Tetouan, represented by its mayor and President of MedCities Mr. Mohamed Idaomar.

MedCities organized a parallel session entitled “Strategic Planning and Multi-level Governance” with the participation of different experiences of planning at multiple levels. The participants of this table were Ms Nadia Gouta, representing the Ministry for Develpoment and International Cooperation of Tunisia, who presented the experience of national and regional development plans, Mr Hijazi, who presented the planning experience of the city of Saida and Mr Oriol Estela, coordinator of the Barcelona Metropolitan Strategic Plan.

The Urban Hub of the CMI is a working group gathering the main institutions working on urban sustainable development in the Mediterranean region.
