Barcelona hosted one of the activities foreseen in the celebration of the 25th anniversary of the Mediterranean network

Last 26 October, on the occasion of the celebration of the MedCities 25th Anniversary, the network organised a day of general discussion on the challenges and opportunities of Mediterranean cities and the value of city-to-city cooperation.

Representatives of European organizations working on decentralized cooperation and political representatives of Mediterranean cities such as Malaga, Larnaka, Saida, Tripoli, Sfax, Sousse, Dubrovnik and Tetuan, participated in the event. MedCities members took the opportunity to share their successful experiences participating in the network.

Over the course of these years, MedCities has implemented dozens of projects and has proven that cooperation between cities is a valuable development tool for a region that has experienced many difficulties on multiple fronts. MedCities has often represented a window of opportunity for cities: it has let them connect daily challenges with opportunities for cooperation and networking, particularly via decentralised cooperation.

Twenty five years later, MedCities is a tool that is more necessary than ever before. This valuable instrument lets hopes for peace and stability in the Mediterranean be converted into concrete and tangible projects. Initiatives are needed such as this one to make the large regional political commitments a reality.

Cities and their mayors want to have a decisive role in this area, and MedCities is one of the tools that makes it possible. The celebration event in Barcelona was a strong political commitment  with the MedCities mission and objectives. A strong political commitment for the improvement of the social cohesion and development for the Mediterranean.
