The 1st round of workshops to co-design the BlueMissionMed Operational Implementation Roadmap for the mitigation of marine pollution and contamination in the Mediterranean took place on 18-20 July 2023, in the form of interactive online events.
The workshops aimed to present and discuss with targeted stakeholders the outputs of the 1st BlueMissionMed Stakeholder Forum, organized as a side event in the context of the European Commission’s high-level event EU Mission ‘Restore our Ocean and Waters by 2030’ – The Mediterranean lighthouse in action Palermo (30 May 2023), and to prioritize the challenges, needs and future supporting activities to achieve the Mediterranean basin Lighthouse objectives. Related industrial sectors were addressed in three thematic workshops. MedCities especially engaged in the first two.
The one related to “Agriculture, fisheries and aquaculture” was a very good occasion to mainstream the findings and policy recommendations of the Interreg MED project BLUEFASMA.
At the one on “Plastic production, municipal solid waste/water management, and treatment”, we shared our experience on challenges and needs in southern and eastern Mediterranean cities and solutions that are being tested and their transferability. The experience of the ENI CBC MED Med4Waste mentoring schemes and the approach of A’SIMA Tunis to enhance governance and create sustainable waste management at the inter-municipal level were at the core of MedCities’ contribution.
