A participatory process facilitated by MedCities KTC Al Fayhaa has led to the identification of 12 priority actions and projects to promote tourism as a source of economic development in Batroun (Lebanon).

Batroun region lays among the districts of Byblos to the South and Bcharre i Koura to the north, all famous for their touristic offer and cultural heritage, hosting several Unesco Human Heritage sites.

Both the city and the Union of Municipalities of Batroun are members of the MedCities network and have jointly pointed out the potential of the area for the development of nature tourism and religious tourism as one of the strategic priorities for the socio-economic growth of the region.

In this context and with the support of the Catalan Agency for Development Cooperation and the Barcelona Metropolitan Area, the KTC Al Fayhaa facilitated the recruitment of a local expert, to develop a field study and a participatory work that has led to identify priority actions for the development of the tourist potential of the area within the framework of the Strategic Plan for the Development of the Batroun district and the Batroun Region.

The participatory character of the diagnosis (SWOT) is especially valuable since it has been recognized that the municipalities of the union do not often cooperate on technical or strategic aspects. The process resulted on the identification of 12 priority actions and projects which would guide further initiatives and technical assistance in the territory fostering its cohesion and economic development.
