The seminar forms part of the project GeDeTUn, funded by the Municipality of Barcelona and the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona, which supports the capacities of the municipalities of Bizerte and Kairouan in waste management.
MedCities, in collaboration with the Municipality of Bizerte, the Municipality of Kairouan and the National Federation of Tunisian Cities, organised a seminar for technical staff involved on municipal waste management in Tunisia, on the 9th May in the city of Bizerte.
The seminar addressed the whole cycle of waste management and focused especially in the two issues that were treated during the project lifetime in the cities of Bizerte and Kairouan respectively: the different systems of containerisation for waste collection; and the optimisation of the management of municipal waste, including collection routes and localisation of containers. The experiences of the city of Barcelona and the city of Tanger were presented during the morning and in the afternoon two workshops were held around these two issues, with detailed presentations of the pilot projects of each city and a vivid debate among the participants. In addition to these subjects, the seminar addressed the issue of mobilisation of actors around sustainable waste management, with presentations of ACR+, the cities of Sfax and the MedCities project in the city of Nabeul and was finalised with an intervention on waste treatment by the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona, a subject that is currently being largely discussed in Tunisia.
The seminar was an opportunity to gather the representatives of 15 cities, mainly Tunisian ones, and the different interventions facilitated the exchange of experiences and contributed to a live debate among the participants.
