Last December the project “COOP – VERD” in NAbeul, Tunisia,  was approved for funding by the Municipality of Barcelona and will be carried out by MedCities, in cooperation with the Municipality of Nabeul and the “Association Eco-Tourism and Environment”.

COOP – VERD Cooperation for the valorisation of green employment, recycling and waste will last until December 2017 and will intervene with the informal waste pickers in order to improve their socio-economic conditions.

The overall objective is to promote local employment through the enhancement of the collection of domestic and commercial waste, by organising the activity of waste-picking.

This project forms part of the larger national and regional initiative to support “Municipal Alliance for Energy Transition” which implements in Nabeul a pilot project in order to stimulate energy transition measures in the frame of municipal waste management.  MedCities project contributes in the generation of green employment and the promotion of recycling at waste producer level.

A Convention is under signature among the partners of the project and the first activity to be launched will be a diagnosis of the socio-economic conditions of waste-pickers in Nabeul in order to understand their working patterns and circuits, identify their needs and the opportunities that the formalisation of their activities could offer.
