Al Karak is a Greater municipality located in the Karak province in Jordan at 140km south of Amman. Karak is one of the ancient cities, and it dates back to 8 thousand years BC. Currently, it has a population of around 145.000 inhabitants.

Culture “Al-Karak’s cultural scene is deeply rooted in its rich history, with local festivals and traditional crafts reflecting the blend of Arab and Crusader heritage.”

Architecture “The iconic Al-Karak Castle, a majestic Crusader fortress overlooking the city, stands as a testament to the region’s historical significance.”

Economy “The economy of Al-Karak is driven by agriculture, local handicrafts, and tourism, with the castle and surrounding sites attracting visitors from around the world.”

Nature “The breathtaking views of the rolling hills and the Dead Sea from Al-Karak’s elevated position offer a stunning natural landscape that enchants visitors and locals alike.”

Al-Karak is unique for its strategic location on a hilltop, offering a rich history, stunning views, and a mix of cultural influences that have shaped its identity over the centuries.

The main challenge

Climate change is a major challenge for Al-Karak, as it intensifies existing environmental stresses, such as water scarcity, extreme heat, and flooding. The city’s location in a region affected by conflict, as well as hosting a large number of refugees, compounds its vulnerability to climate impacts. Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in this context requires addressing both the environmental and socio-economic challenges.
