Name of the project

COOP – VERD – Cooperation for the valorisation of green employment, recycling and waste

Description

The overall objective of COOP-VERD is to promote local employment through the enhancement of the collection of domestic and commercial waste, by organising the activity of waste-picking. COOP – VERD will last until December 2017 and will intervene with the informal waste pickers in order to improve their socio-economic conditions.

This project forms part of the larger national and regional initiative to support « Municipal Alliance for Energy Transition » which implements in Nabeul a pilot project in order to stimulate energy transition measures in the frame of municipal waste management. MedCities project contributes in the generation of green employment and the promotion of recycling at waste producer level.

Furthermore, the following results are expected:

Improved sorting of household waste: The city of Nabeul is supported in promoting optimized management of recyclable waste

Legal and societal recognition of the informal waste picking activity: The activity of the waste scavengers is respected and structured in a formal way.

Improvement of hygienic and socio-economic conditions for scavengers

Diversification of valorisation schemes: Several marketing and valorisation opportunities are identified for the collected products.
