This Interreg-Med funded project will adopt circular economy principles applied to tourism in order to render tourism in islands and low-density zones in Mediterranean more sustainable and responsible.

The kick off meeting brought the 14 partners together to discuss about the project’s main goals, work plan and targets. The kick off meeting started with the presentation of all the involved partners within them, two of our city members, Larnaka in Cyprus, and Palma in Spain, that will implement a pilot on sustainable mobility and marine litter prevention, respectively.  Three other pilots will be carry on; one in Himara in Albania, that will implement  pilot on supporting alternative mobility patterns,  another in Gozo, in Malta, on collection and reuse of rainwater runoff and other, in Rethymno, in Greece, on supporting alternative/electric mobility powered by renewable energy sources (RESs).  All the partners will work together until June 2022 to enhance the development of a sustainable and responsible coastal and maritime tourism beyond the Mediterranean area.

MedCities will have a key role as a leader of the Capitalization work package, working to go beyond the mere promotion of obtained results by means of a concrete uptake and implementation of INCIRCLE methodology and approach in new Mediterranean coastal tourism territories. The partnership aims to ensure that 16 tourist destinations, regional or local, will be covered by INCIRCLE assessment of circular tourism, and 6 regional or local strategies include the transition towards a more sustainable and circular tourism.
