A first restriction on group meetings early march followed the lockdown of population. City councils of Tanger and Barcelona confirm their commitment to the project and will decide on a new date in the coming weeks.
The calendar of implementation of most of our projects has been rearraged as a response to the COVID-19 crisis. Most countries in the mediterranean region have limited or banned any kind of gathering, including public events, workshops or meetings. It is the case of Morrocco, where restrictive measures have been adopted since early March.
The first technical visit and thematic seminar were postponed sine die in agreement with the city council of Tanger and of Barcelona, associated to the project. The Secretariat of MedCities is in close contact with both administrations, which signaled their commitment to the project and agreed on deciding on a new date as soon as the crisis clears out.
TangerAccueil will not be put on hold completely, though. An interntional migrations expert engaged for this project early March will continue to work developping a map of actors and services offerred to migrants in Tanger. This is the first step for setting up a one-shop information center (Centre d’Accueil) and the Migration Council of Tanger.
The first technical visit of the project was foreseen for 15-17 April in Tanger and would have counted on the participation of local migration policy officers of the city council of Barcelona. A thematic seminar on innovative local policies on migration was also foreseen as part of the program, aimed at gathering civil society, local experts and the city council to discuss on the needs and challenges of offering basic services to migrants located in Tanger.
