MedCities approved the creation of thematic working groups back in 2021 and since then two groups have started walking. Since October 2023, the sustainable mobility working group has become a city group to discuss the transition towards sustainable mobility, the challenges, and the roles of city councils and associations of municipalities in the Mediterranean. The group is currently constituted of 12 municipalities and metropolises: Agadir, Antalya, As Salt, Dubrovnik, Irbid, Limassol and Mersin. Their heads of the transport department, mobility officers, and other profiles have gathered in a series of online and physical activities that have generated the first corpus of knowledge and joint key messages representing the city’s views on the future of their urban transformation.

Over two online sessions and one technical visit in Barcelona celebrated between October and December 2023, the participants have discussed and visited on-site projects addressing shared challenges such as the transformation and redefining of public spaces to build more inclusive cities; the involvement of stakeholders in such transformation to raise acceptability and awareness; the management of touristic mobility to preserve urban quality of life and the effective participation of city councils in mobility and transport policy making at all levels.

The report of the technical visit and slides used by the thematic facilitator throughout the two thematic sessions can be found here.

End of the year, a publication on the group’s first exchanges and key messages will be issued to prepare the path for next year’s promising endeavors!
