In recent months, MedCities has engaged in multiple activities to support its members in their efforts to improve recycling and waste management, including February visits to the Al Fayhaa Urban Community and Mennieh.
In Al Fayhaa, MedCities – along with various Catalan partners – is supporting the Urban Community through a project to improve its solid waste management. In February, MedCities participated in a joint technical visit (along with the Catalan Agency for Development Cooperation) to the Mechanical-Biological Treatment Plant and new sanitary landfill being created. In addition to meeting with technical staff and the project´s implementing partner, UNDP, MedCities also met with the mayors of Tripoli and El Mina – both member municipalities of the Urban Community – to assess progress, discuss the launch of the next pilot projects and possible follow-up activities.
Also in February, MedCities participated in the final event of a technical assistance in Mennieh which implemented an awareness campaign in schools to emphasise the importance of sorting waste at source. The final event brought together around 400 people, including the head of the Education Department of North Lebanon, local authorities and representatives of participating schools. It was also the opportunity for groups of students who were involved in the campaign to present their creative uses for recycling, with prizes awarded to several pieces of work.
Speaking at the event, MedCities Director Oriol Barba emphasised the common nature of the challenges facing Mediterranean municipalities with respect to waste management, arguing in favour of finding shared solutions.
