MedCities is supporting the Urban Community of Al Fayhaa (UCF) in the reinforcement of their capacity on the use IT to manage municipal services through more interactive and participatory technology
The Urban Community of Al Fayhaa (UCF) will reinforce their capacity by using IT to manage municipal services through more interactive and participatory technology. Nowadays, 80% of the data managed by City Councils are geo-located. Publishing them on maps gives value to the data, helps to understand, analyze and better manage the city. The action is taking the municipality of Tripoli as a starting point, since it already has a developed GIS system in place despite it being outdated.
A technical visit took place in September 2019 to take stock of the present system, layers and data, and of existing additional data that could be included as a layer. Also during the visit, different existing options were presented to upgrade to a cloud GIS system with SAAS (software as a service) possibilities, which could be linked to apps for continued use and updates. This has resulted on a selection of possible options to further develop the GIS and define a short term and long term strategy for its development.
Following the assessment agreement has been reached with the UCF and the IT Department of Tripoli City Council to start this 2020 with a pilot phase which will result on an online City Guide with information on points of interest, tourism routes and activity Agenda. Training on the use of the platform and the maintenance of dataset will be provided.
This effort will be carried out in cooperation with the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona (AMB) while MedCites will provide external expertise.
The process will also benefit technicians from the municipalities of El Mina, El-Beddawi and Qalamoon, members of the Urban Community of Al Fayhaa, through exchanges and participation in training sessions. The final objective is that this pilot action is subsequently adopted by the entire UCF and the system is further developed.
