Roma 2002

It was attended by representatives of 10 Medcities towns, 8 international institutions and 11 Italian and Roman agencies or institutions. Many member towns were absent due to the unfortunate events of the Israelo-Palestinian conflict and to bureacratic impediments subsequent to the 11 September 2001 events.

The Secretary General presented the Activity Report 1999-2001 and the Prospects for the period 2002-03.

The Financial Report 1999-2001 was presented by the Technical Secetary. The 5th April a meeting was held for the preparation of the Johannesburg World Summit on Sustainable Development organized by the UTO, Medcities and the City of Rome.

The last day, was devoted to the assessment of the ongoing and completed projects and the building of new ones (see main interventions in other documents: Limassol MUWM Contribution, VI Assemblea Generale “Medcities” e manifestazioni collaterali, Tripoli Environmental & Development Observatory ).

The Assembly concluded with the following results:

  • Confirmation of Mr. Veltroni, Major of Rome, as President of Medcities
  • Reduction in the number of Bureau members and the election of the new one composed by the towns of Alexandria, Barcelona, Limassol, Marseilles, Rome and Sousse.
  • Decentralisation and representation by Bureau members in the various instances where Medcities participates. enlargement of the network to new members with a maximum of five per country.
  • Approval of a Final Declaration by Medcities on the need to relaunch the cooperation between local authorities in the Euromediterranean region particularly through the support to the Euro Med Pacte proposals.
  • Further discussion of the Statutes of the new Medcities Association in the Steering Committee.
