The Catalan Agency for Development Cooperation has just awarded MedCities with a new cooperation project engaging a group of Mediterranean cities.
The 12-month project aims to strengthen social cohesion in Tunisia, Morocco and Lebanon by promoting local governments’ action in the field of social innovation, participation and inclusion. The project targets two groups in particular for their vulnerable situation, now aggravated by the impact of the sanitary and economic crisis of the Covid19 : youth and the migrants.
The project puts local governments at the center of transformative strategies for a more cohesive, equitable and inclusive society: the promotion of participatory bodies at the municipal level targeting youth in Tunisia; the capitalization of innovative local policies on the reception and integration of migrants in Morocco; measures for inclusive and participatory local governance as a tool to improve youth confidence in their local institutions in Lebanon.
The project, entitled “Strengthening the role of local governments in the Mediterranean region for good governance and social cohesion” will actively involve some of the members of the network, M’Saken in Tunisia, Chefchouen in Morocco and Dannieh Union of Municipalities in Lebanon. The capitalization of the results will involve a wider number of municipalities in MedCities network, as well as the Knowledge Transfer Centers (KTCs) of the Maghreb (Sfax, Tunisia) and the Mashrek (Urban Community of Al Fayhaa, Lebanon).
A new edition of the 'MedCities Dialogues' was held in December, titled 'Lebanese Municipalities Under Aggression: Daily Life and Emergency,' sat in the same table Mrs. Elisenda Alamany, Vice President of the Barcelona Metropolitan Area and Mr. Mustafa Hijazi, member of the Saida Municipal Council.
The second thematic webinar of the “Greener and Climate Resilient Cities” Working Group brought together representatives from 10 Mediterranean cities to discuss urban applications of the Water-Energy-Food-Ecosystems (WEFE) approach. Organized by MedCities with the support of the Barcelona City Council and in collaboration with WEFE4MED, the event focused on sharing strategies and experiences for sustainable urban development within the WEFE framework.
Two webinars were organized on Thursday 12 and Friday 13 December to enable an exchange of experiences between the cities of Guadalajara (Mexico) and Antalya (Türkiye). These one-hour sessions, focusing on the best practices implemented by both cities in waste management, were held within the framework of the project MetroResilience Guadalajara, funded by the European Union through the Partnership for Sustainable Cities call.
