On January 22-24, MedCities participated in the 3rd Mediterranean Water Forum in Cairo (Egypt), organised by the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) and the Mediterranean Institute for Water (IME).
MedCities co-organised together with IPEMED, one of the working groups related to Water Re-use and treatment in Mediterranean cities and territories. This Forum was a preparatory gathering for the 8th World Water Forum to be held in Brasilia on 19-23 March 2018.
Despite important improvements, access to safe water and sanitation are still boiling issues in Southern and Eastern Mediterranean Countries, especially considering their structural water stress situation, growing anthropogenic pressures and anticipated climate change impacts. The Mediterranean region only gathers 3% of freshwater resources and 1.2% of the world’s renewable natural water resources, but hosts about 60% of the world’s population who does not have much access to water.
Consequently, as regards Mediterranean cities, one of the main challenge of the session was to improve the resilience of their current water management & sanitation systems. It offered opportunities to break away from past water management approaches and to shift to innovative water management solutions, such as integrated urban water management, which includes the use of treated wastewater.
Beyond the General Secretariat, the Municipality of Zarqa (Jordan) also participated in this working group and will participate in the World Water Forum next month in Brasilia.
