The mentoring expert has been supporting the municipality in the last months by providing advice on how to identify the key variables to calculate traffic congestion or pollution and how to collect data.

Between the 4th and the 9th July, the expert visited the pilot area of the project, a highly dense urban axis linking the university campus with a commercial and residential area that is central to the city traffic management. The problems with congestion, pollution and safety motivated the Greater Irbid Municipality to apply as replicator to the Urban Transports‘ call launched last December.

The mentoring expert has been supporting the municipality in the last months by providing advice on how to identify the key variables to calculate traffic congestion or pollution and how to collect data. During his visit, the expert met the Greater Irbid Municipality technical team involved in the initiative and had the chance to discuss the field work to be done with a team of volunteers collaborating with the city.

The municipality has participated in two bilateral exchange meetings with the pioneer of this initiative, Thessaloniki (Greece), who has shared its experience during the REMEDIO project. The focus is put on how to identify the needs and challenges of a given area through participatory tools and on this basis imagine other ways to organise, manage or control the traffic to favour a safer, less polluted and friendly environment.

As from September, the technical team of Greater Irbid Municipality and the volunteer group will launch the fieldwork to collect data on the uses of different modes of transport in the pilot area. Stakeholder and citizens’ consultation will be organised to come up with three different low carbon scenarios proposing different upgrades on the current context. The process will go up until December 2021.
