MedCities participated in the signature of the annexes of the Memorandum of Understanding between the Permanent Secretariat of the Pelagos Agreement and the Mediterranean Biodiversity Protection Community (MBPC), which has been developed with the objective of promoting and facilitating technical and scientific transboundary cooperation in the design and implementation of biodiversity protection and management actions.
The Memorandum of Understanding has been developed in the frame of the Pelagos Sanctuary Management and Action Plan (2022-2027), adopted by the Contracting Parties (France, Italy and Monaco) at the 8th Meeting of the Parties (COP 8) held in Rome on 15th and 16th December 2021. During a side event at COP 8, the MBPC, representing more than 300 actors including nature conservationists, marine protected area managers, among others, and 17 projects working in the Mediterranean region, together with the Pelagos Secretariat, agreed on and signed all five Annexes detailing the committed actions that will be co-financed by the Interreg Mediterranean Programme for the time period 2021-2022.
As partner of the MBPC, MedCities committed to engage in this support for a period of at least one year especially focusing on capacity building and networking activities addressing local authorities signatories of the Pelagos Charter around pressures as pollution and recreational sailing.
The Barcelona Academy for Mediterranean Municipalities (BAMM) took place from October 15 to 18, 2024, organised by MedCities and the Barcelona City Council. The academy gathered 16 technical experts and mayors from ten cities: Amman, Antalya, Barcelona, Bethlehem, Benghazi, Irbid, Málaga, Sarajevo, Tétouan, Tripoli (Lebanon), and the non-Mediterranean city of Nouakchott.
MedCities was invited to participate and it was a great experience as the Secretary-General could underline that the migratory aspect is now included as a key topic to be addressed in some of our projects such as ASIMATunis strategic plan, and included in some of the actions of projects that look at the greening the cities concept with a migration perspective, like Irbid. Also, Canals could explain the experience of the Tanger Accueil project.
The municipalities of Agadir, Ancona, Dubrovnik, Izmir, Mersin, Sarajevo & Rethymno met in Montpellier to visit on the field the Metropole Mediterrannee Montpellier's transformative projects to prioritise pedestrians on the urban space, and promote cycling and public transport, with new tramlines and strong efforts to support the change of behaviours of daily commuting in the city.
