
Armed with the MINKA app on their smartphones, 14 volunteers aged between 25 and 70 took to La Misericordia beach in Málaga to record the area’s rich coastal life. The so-called BioBlitz, event to register/cense biodiversity, invited participants to search for coastal plants and animals, contributing with their observations to MINKA. On this participatory platform, volunteer participants and researchers worldwide work together to build a biodiversity database. During the event, 60 observations were uploaded, resulting in the identification of 24 species—primarily mollusks, including Mytilus galloprovincialis and Acanthocardia tuberculata.


Before heading to the beach, the group gathered at La Térmica Cultural Centre, where they were welcomed by Málaga City Council representatives and received a briefing on how to use the app and about the local ecosystems and their biodiversity.

The activity was promoted by the ANERIS project and co-organized by MedCities, Málaga City Council, and the environmental cooperative Ecoherencia. The initiative is part of a broader effort to close gaps in marine biodiversity data across the Mediterranean.
“Single events are not enough,” organizers stressed. “Sustained, collaborative networks are essential to ensure long-term contributions.”

MedCities confirmed it will continue working with Málaga, city member, to promote citizen science and announced that similar events will take place in other Mediterranean locations in the coming months.
