In the frame of the IMSWM project, the Urban Community of Al Fayhaa and the UNPD as implementing partner have recently launched a process for the elaboration of a Strategic Waste Management and Treatment Plan aiming to provide an integrated strategy for waste management in the area.
The Strategic Waste Management and Treatment Plan will complement the pilot projects on recycling and selective collection of waste that will be launched in October in 4 pilot areas, one in each of the cities of the UC AF. In parallel with the preparation of the pilot projects, the UC Al Fayhaa and UNDP are working on an awareness and sensitization campaign that will target the residents, the schools, the civil society and other relevant actors in the pilot areas.
In order to reinforce the correct preparation of the pilot projects the Catalan Agency of Development Cooperation organized a mission in 17th and 18th July 2018 focusing on planning upcoming activities. Another mission, with a more technical focus, will be held in October, prior to the launching of the pilot project, in order to review together with the local partners and experts the Strategic Waste Management and Treatment Plan, the Awareness Campaign and the operational part of the pilot projects.
The IMSWM project aims to reinforce the capacities of the UC AF and reduce the amount of waste that ends up in the landfill of Tripoli by promoting recycling, separate collection and waste valorization. It is coordinated by the Catalan Agency of Development Cooperation (ACCD) and funded by a consortium that includes the Municipality of Barcelona, the Barcelona Metropolitan Area, the Catalan Fund for Development Cooperation (FCCD). MedCities and the Catalan Waste Agency offer technical support to the partners for its correct implementation.
Apart from IMSWM project, the UC Al Fayhaa is active in other initiatives that aim to promote recycling and selective collection. Recently, in cooperation with civil society and environmental NGOs, UC AF supported waste separation activities organized in the field by facilitating separate collection. Such initiative are in coordination and harmony with IMSWM project and will profit from the awareness and information campaign.
