Ramallah

Ramallah / Palestine

Ramallah means “God’s Hill” in Arabic & Aramaic.

Ramallah is a proud, growing, and cosmopolitan city. As the seat of the Government of the State of Palestine, Ramallah city hosts the major organizations in Palestine, including NGOs, local and international companies and banks, diplomatic missions, and other organizations. It is also a home to the burgeoning arts and cultural scene.

Situated some 880m above sea level, approximately 16km north of Jerusalem, Ramallah was originally established in the mid-1500s by the Haddadin family as a Christian village. It grew throughout the 17th and 18th centuries as a predominantly agricultural village, and by the mid-1800s, missionary groups had built some schools and churches.

Established in 1908, Ramallah Municipality has served the city’s residents (75,000 in 2023) and visitors for over a century. During this time, the city has weathered multiple wars, witnessed rapid economic progress, and became a central city in the West Bank. The municipality’s countless projects and initiatives have helped transform the ancient village into the bustling, metropolitan hub it is today.

The current mayor of Ramallah is Mr. Issa Kassis
