MedCities has launched a comprehensive toolkit for the URWAN project designed to support municipalities in implementing nature-based solutions (NbS) to address the growing impacts of climate change, with a particular focus on water-related challenges such as droughts and flooding.
Developed in collaboration with partners of the Interreg Euro-MED URWAN project, the URWAN Enabler Pack provides local authorities with practical resources to plan, design, and implement effective urban nature-based solutions. The package consists of four complementary tools that enable cities to tackle climate resilience in a structured and robust manner.

The first component, the URWAN Training Programme, equips Mediterranean municipalities with practical knowledge, case studies, and implementation tools through three concise training modules. The programme is designed to help local authorities overcome common barriers and successfully deploy water-sensitive urban nature-based solutions for climate adaptation.
The URWAN NbS Catalogue showcases a range of water-smart and water-intensive urban nature-based solutions that can help cities mitigate climate impacts while enhancing biodiversity, improving water and air quality, and creating attractive, community-oriented public spaces.
The package also includes the Start Park Guidelines, which offer a replicable framework for communities to co-design urban nature-based solutions. The guidelines aim to strengthen climate resilience, promote sustainable water management, and foster inclusive green spaces that support learning, biodiversity, and community engagement.
Completing the toolkit is the URWAN Checklist, a practical planning and implementation aid that helps ensure all critical elements of a successful nature-based solution are considered throughout the project lifecycle. The checklist supports the development of credible, effective interventions aligned with internationally recognized standards. Introductory video.
MedCities will officially present this milestone on 11 June at two major events: the Madrid Cities Forum and the final event of the Interreg Euro-MED URWAN Project in Brussels.
