Within the framework of A’SIMA Tunis pilot project consisting of setting a multi-purpose eco-center for waste management in Greater Tunis, studies are ongoing to assess the project’s feasibility at all levels (i.e. institutional, environmental, social, and economic scales).
A public consultation was therefore organized on Saturday 16 November to introduce the project, and assess the social acceptability of the project, including the potential impacts and positive outcomes, to the main stakeholder.
In total, 57 persons participated in this consultation, including public stakeholders such as the National Agency for Waste Management ANGED, the National Agency for Environmental Protection Tunisia ANPE or the Ministry of the Interior, economic stakeholders, and NGOs representing citizens.
As the main conclusions of this workshop, the expert leading this consultation emphasized on the need to actively involve the stakeholders in the project to ensure the continuity of social acceptability, namely local people from the neighborhoods where the infrastructure will be placed, local authorities, NGOs, and experts. She also advocated for complete transparency, communicating the positive outcomes of the project and the mitigation measures planned in case there are any negative externalities.
This project would be the first of its kind in Tunisia. It would reinforce inter-municipal cooperation as it involves 7 municipalities of Greater Tunis, namely El Mourouj, Sidi Hessine, Radès, Megrine, Bardo and Ben Arous, and Tunis.
