Al-Koura is located in the north of Lebanon, bordering Tripoli, Zgharta, Bcharri and Batroun districts, and the Mediterranean Sea to the west. 

Al-Koura embraces near enough some 46 towns and villages over an area of approximately 3.75km2, and its capital and largest town is Amioun.

The population of Al-Koura is approximately 75,000 inhabitants in winter, and about 100,000 in summer season when immigrants come back for a visit.

There are 34 municipalities in Al- Koura of which 30 belong to the Union of Municipalities, with Mr. Karim Bou Karim as president of the union.

The Koura region is particularly known for its olive tree cultivation and olive oil production with 2,500,000 trees in the central plains. In fact, the bulk of the agricultural activity in this area is centralized on Olive plantations, and there is barely any village in the district that does not depend on olive trees for its income.

The area stretches from the Mediterranean Sea up to Mount Lebanon, and includes a series of foothills surrounding a low-lying plain where olive is cultivated. It’s worth mentioning that the olive plantations of Koura are among the most widespread in Lebanon.

Koura scenery is famous for its views of the snow-topped mountains as well as the sea from several old churches and monasteries hovering on the hillsides. Visitors to Koura can enjoy its restaurants, coffee shops, small pubs, and of course the traditional charm of its towns, as well as the opportunity for horseback riding. Well-known crafts from this area include homemade olive oil soap and preserves, such as: jam, tomato paste, olive oil, and pickles.

Al-Koura district has the highest percentage of university degree holders in the country, and it is also home to the prestigious University of Balamand, as well as an important number of local and international schools.
