On 30 November 2012, the Municipality of Tarragona set up the “Tarragona Smart Mediterranean City Private Foundation” in order to coordinate and lead the project Tarragona Smart Mediterranean City. This initiave will held this year the first edition of a summer course focused on the topic.

This project was also prompted by the decision of facing a historic opportunity with the organization of the Mediterranean Games in 2017. This challenge must mobilize and encourage the creation of its own model of Smart City, with a distinctly Mediterranean . Tarragona plans to become a magnet for talent and investment in order to turn into a model of innovation and research in the area of efficiency , sustainability and quality of life.

The aim of the Foundation is to give cohesion to the whole project of Tarragona Smart Mediterranean City, based on five main axes: water management , mobility , energy, health and tourism and heritage . The Foundation will ensure the successful integration of all initiatives that participate disseminating the contents and results, encouraging communication between stakeholders , and accompanying the evolution of Tarragona into a smart city model.

The expected results are an economic recovery thanks to job creation and new productive opportunities, the internationalization and global positioning brand Tarragona , the promotion of cultural change and citizen participation, and the incorporation of technology and knowledge management and decision making.

The Tarragona Smart Mediterranean City Private Foundation, under the impetus of the City Council and with the collaboration of MedCités, will organize next December the first edition of a five-day course aimed to offer to the managing staff of public administrations the most advanced concepts of a smart city, committed to urban development, energy efficiency, sustainable;mobility,new technologies,participation and egovernment.

The course will be taught by international experts and several grants will be offered to assure the participation of the Mediterranean cities executive managers. Places will be limited to 25 registrations.
