MedCities Secretariat visited, in mid-May, the Municipality of Sfax as part of the MAIS project with interesting field visits to the future cycling paths and meetings with local stakeholders.

The Municipality of Sfax is leading the MAIS Project that aims to upgrade the quality of citizens’ lives through a better and spread use of low-carbon alternative modes of transport. Among the project’s main axis, the municipality will draft its circulation plan, and cycling and pedestrian plans. The Municipality of Chihia, in the Grand Sfax, is a key partner and is very active in the partnership. MAIS Project is facing a key stage of its implementation two years after being launched, with the finalization of strategic works in early autumn, including the future cycling path (4km that will be developed in the sea-corniche area of the city of Sfax and a trendy zone for walkers in Chihia), the Sfax’s Photovoltaic Central that will distribute green energy to respond to the ramping city’s low carbon transport needs.

Meetings and visits to the future cycling paths in the Corniche area in Sfax were organized last week, together with walking and tailored visits to the future walking areas in Chihia. Another interesting moment was the inter-departmental meeting celebrated in the municipality of Sfax, where discussions were rich and awareness was generated on the project’s strategic goals. The project is also facing a very active month of June, with a very active celebration of World Environmental Day in both cities of Sfax and Chihia and multiple celebrations, activities, and walking and cycling tours between the 5th and the 8th of June. Preparatory work with the communication agency hired to pilot the promotion efforts was organized and hosted by the Chihia City Council.

The next visits will feature the upcoming project Steering Committee and focus on the autumn activities in September.
