Cooperation among Mediterranean cities is crucial to addressing global challenges such as the climate crisis and migration. MedCities recently had the opportunity to meet with the new Minister for the European Union and External Action of the Government of Catalonia (Generalitat de Catalunya), Mr. Jaume Duch, to discuss the work of our Mediterranean partnership. MedCities’ Secretary General, Mr. Josep Canals, the Head of Programmes and Network Relations, Mrs. Konstantia Nikopoulou, and the Head of Policy, Mrs. Carolina Pérez, shared insights on key projects supported by the Government of Catalonia through the Catalan Agency for Development Cooperation. These include initiatives such as TT Emploi and the completed EMPLOIMED project -both focused in Moroccan cities such as Tanger and Tetouan-, which focus on youth training and job creation with a strong emphasis on sustainability.
We also discussed the next phase of collaboration between our two institutions, with continued backing from the Generalitat. Moreover, the Government of Catalonia holds observer membership within MedCities.
As always, the MedCities Secretariat is excited to continue working together towards a more sustainable Mediterranean that places cities at the heart of the solution.
