The Municipality of Sfax, with the support of MedCities, has successfully submitted for funding the project “MAIS”: Active and Intelligent Mobility in Sfax through innovative actions and initiatives in energy saving and resilience to climate change” in the frame of the call Climate for Cities (C4C) in the Southern Neighbourhood.

The project will be led by this Tunisian municipality and implemented in partnership from MedCities and the Municipality of Chihia for a total of 4 years. The EU Delegation in Tunisia is the main donor, with a budget of 2.5M €, however the project has received funds from the Agency for Development Cooperation of the Catalan Government, the German cooperation agency GiZ and the Tunisian Fund for Loans and Support for Local Authorities.

The MAIS project aims to promote the transition of the city of Sfax towards sustainable development and contribute to the remarkable efforts deployed for the implementation of its local action plan in favour of sustainable energy and climate. The project aims to improve the currently unsustainable transport system by committing to a transition towards sustainable mobility. The needs identified is to strengthen sustainable mobility planning, to improve the infrastructures and to launch pilot projects in order to initiate the transition towards a sustainable mobility system.

MedCities will accompany the city of Sfax in this process, by providing technical assistance in the implementation of the activities, contribute to the process of launching a metropolitan mobility agency and reinforce the technical and political capacities of the city. Also, it will guide the Municipal services in the management and implementation of the funds of the project.
