Five pilot demonstrations are kicking off this summer, from Balearic Islands to Cyprus, to test the introduction of circular economy approaches to island and low density areas tourism development.
The partners of the Interreg MED project INCIRCLE brainstormed, on 25 and 26th May, through a webinar about the challenges posed by the current sanitary crisis for sustainable tourism in islands and the opportunities to use current projects and instruments to seek for a strengthen way out of the crisis. MedCities is leading the capitalization work package, working to go beyond the mere promotion of obtained results by means of a concrete uptake and implementation of InCircle methodology and approach in new Mediterranean coastal tourism territories.
InCircle is now entering its testing phase, when pilot demonstration actions on circular economy approaches to tourism planning and management are being tested. Local partners, including MedCities member cities of Larnaca and Palma, presented the concept and action plan for their pilot actions, and the adaptations which might be necessary due to uncertain tourism session ahead. The main domains being tested are waste, water, energy and mobility.
Whereas Larnaca will continue focusing on sustainable mobility through different tourism routs, Palma will adapt its pilot action due to the very much affected tourist session and will move from reducing waste generated by mass tourism to promoting and facilitating circularity in the restoration sector engaging hotels on the concept of sustainable food systems with a circular approach.
The impact of all pilots will be measured through a set of sustainability indicators that will then feed regional tourism strategies.
The partnership aims to ensure that 16 tourist destinations, regional or local, will be covered InCircle assessment of circular tourism, and 6 regional or local strategies include the transition towards a more sustainable and circular tourism.
MedCities contributed to the debate, concretely in the round table about ‘Euro-Mediterranean Cooperative Responses to address climate change’. The 5th edition of the MedCatDays offered a space for meeting and dialogue, also for advocacy and visibility of the actors working in the basin.
Within the framework of the inter-municipal cooperation on waste management activity, that belongs to A’SIMA Tunis project component 2 “Metropolitan governance of valorized waste management and inter-municipal waste management”, the last workshop of the concertation was organized at Tunis municipality.
