Barcelona, 11-13 June 2019. As part of of the transfer and capitalisation activities of the GO SUMP project, MedCities coordinated a series of High Level Trainings on Sustainable Mobility. It was attended by mobility technical teams from more than 20 Mediterranean cities, from 12 different countries, with the aim of strengthening technical capacities and promoting the transferability of piloted urban practices, from the Interreg-MED Urban Transport Community (MED-UTC) towards new cities interested in the process of exchanging mobility tools and good practices.

The topics studied during the training courses focused on two key areas identified by the MED-UTC, with special attention to the participation of southern Mediterranean cities in the transfer processes in order to promote more global sustainable mobility policies and practices.

• (I) High-Level Training Course: «Financing Sustainable Mobility»

The sessions of the course on «Financing Sustainable Mobility» included panels covering both the most innovative concepts and the most consolidated mechanisms for financing sustainable mobility. For instance, experts from the Wuppertal Institute in charge of developing the Topic Guide on Funding and financing options for Sustainable Urban Mobility, which is part of the Second edition of the SUMP Guidelines, developed under the auspices of the DG MOVE. Also, the trainings were an occassion for bringing together several representatives from AMB, TMB, ATM, IERMB and Generalitat de Catalunya, being the main key players of the public transports fundanding programmes of the metropolitan region of Barcelona.

• (II) High Level Training Course: «Mobility & Tourism Nexus»

The course on «Mobility & Tourism Nexus» was attended by pioneering experts in the fields of regulations and strategies on urban tourism mobility, as the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya, Barcelona City Council, European Cyclists Federation, CIVITAS and Interreg-MED projects, among others. Methodological concepts and experiences in municipal management of urban tourist mobility in the Mediterranean were presented.

The trainings promoted the strengthening of capacities in the technical departments of the participating Mediterranean cities for the transferring of sustainable mobility practices and policies. Also, the MED-UTC projects’ solutions for the promoting sustainable mobility models were presented,contextualized by Mediterranean specificities, bringing together experts from the urban transport sector, who explored synergies and shared good practices and innovative ideas. In order to understand the current state of the mobility sector in the Mediterranean area, including the challenges and oportunities presented, recommendations were formulated for the improvement of urban mobility in Mediterranean cities.

The conference closed with «Peer to Peer» sessions between cities in the different geographical areas of the Mediterranean, which shared their best practices and tools by means of dynamics that favoured the transfer of knowledge and the study of the potential for replication in new urban contexts.
