The Mediterranean Commission for Sustainable Development (CMDS) of the Mediterranean Action Plan approved the document of its recommendations for the Conference of the Parties (COP23) of the Barcelona Convention for the Protection of the Mediterranean Sea. The event will occur in Portoroz, Slovenia, from December 5 to 8, 2023. (23rd meeting of the Contracting Parties of the Barcelona Convention)
On October 30, the CMDS extended steering committee met and approved the recommendations of the members to send to the delegations of states and countries of the Barcelona Convention.
MedCities added some recommendations that were accepted: to include a mention of the role of local authorities, councils, and unions of municipalities, as key and necessary implementers of the decisions taken by the states through the protocols of the convention. At the same time, the document calls for financial and training instruments for local authorities to promote the implementing role they must play.
Finally, it is requested that academia, civil society, and local authorities be taken into account as actors in the assessment of compliance with the Mediterranean Sustainable Development Strategy (MSSD in English)
The MedCities Secretary-General, Josep Canals, welcomes the fact that these recommendations have been unanimously adopted by the members of the commission so that the states become aware that without local authorities it will be impossible to implement the political decisions reflected in the protocols of the Convention of Barcelona taken by the states in the COPs.
This capitalisation report extracts key lessons from the project, identifying transferable elements that can benefit other Mediterranean cities. The TT-Emploi project, has been implemented in Tangier and Tetouan municipalities as a key initiative to strengthen interinstitutional cooperation to promote professional integration.
MedCities took active part of the launching event in Rabat of the UrbA-CliMa programme in Morrocco, led by GIZ. The programme will help the cities prepare the climate risk analysis and a coherent climate adaptation plans.
MedCities participated at the 19th Plenary Session of the PAM. Secretary General could meet Mrs. Suica, the 1st EU Commissioner for the Mediterranean, and the Roma City Coundil IIRR Director and Advisor to the Mayor.
