More than 150 people participated in the International Seminar “Urban Planning and Sustainable Development: Sfax 2030”, organized by the association Beit El Khibra that took place the last 14th and 15th of April in Sfax, Tunisia

The aim of the seminar was to analyze the need of revising the strategy of Greater Sfax since the current Strategic Plan ends in 2016, taking into consideration the major challenges in urban development that the Tunisian city is facing.

At the same time, while working on the revision of the Strategy, the city is also preparing urban planning documents that will shape the future of the city and its metropolitan agglomeration. The designation of Sfax as the capital of Arab culture for 2016 and the bid to have the Mediterranean Games 2021, will have a great influence on the design of the future of the city.  The Strategy will take into consideration these elements in order to prepare the major development projects.

The presentations focused in three main topics: the work done until now in Sfax, the legal conditions and the framework of the Tunisian administration; the presentation of examples from European cities that have revised their strategy and have faced different challenges; and finally, the support of networks and other institutions such as MedCities, AFD, Caisse de Dépôts, the Housing Agency of Catalonia, other associations as the Solidarity Development Association of Sfax, and the suport of experts in the situation Tunisia and Sfax.

The International Seminar ended with the presentation of the Taparura Project and the performing of 4 participative thematic workshops on Sustainable Mobility, Agency of Regional Planning, Urban Environment and Strategic Projects of Greater Sfax.

The Minister of Housing, Equipment and Territorial Planning of Tunisia closed the seminar.
