On the 9th of December, the Barcelona Metropolitan Area, MedCities and Gabès City Council, partners of ValEUr Gabès project funded by the EU Delegation in Tunisia, met with the experts of Water, Environment and Business for Development (WE&B). This meeting reviewed and validated the methodological proposal and has subsequently launched a participatory process that will lead to a “Non-Conventional Water Resource Municipal Plan” for the city of Gabès in Tunisia. At the end of the project, Gabès will be the first city in Tunisia to implement a strategy and concrete actions to manage this scarce and valued resource.
Apart from the launch of this process, the project has also finalised in January, a 10-day training on Geographical Information Systems for water networks, addressed to members of Gabès City Council and the National Office of Sanitation (ONAS in French acronym). The training had three parts: an introductory one concerning QGIS, GIS data entry to different devices and geo-treatment, that took place in November; the second level of training concerning mapping creation, task automation and web mapping that took place in the end of December; and a final practical part of learning by doing with field visits for the collection of geo-referenced data and the production of concrete maps. Through this training, the project ensured that the Gabès city council and the ONAS team could produce, interpret, and update the GIS databases of the rainwater and sanitation networks.
MedCities contributed to the debate, concretely in the round table about ‘Euro-Mediterranean Cooperative Responses to address climate change’. The 5th edition of the MedCatDays offered a space for meeting and dialogue, also for advocacy and visibility of the actors working in the basin.

Within the framework of the inter-municipal cooperation on waste management activity, that belongs to A’SIMA Tunis project component 2 “Metropolitan governance of valorized waste management and inter-municipal waste management”, the last workshop of the concertation was organized at Tunis municipality.
