The visit was an opportunity to introduce the project of elaboration and implementation of the City Development Strategy.
On May 29, a MedCities delegation represented by its Knowledge Transfer Center of Sfax (KTC Sfax) also accompanied by the UNDP, visited the city of Gabes, MedCities member since 2014. The visit was an opportunity to visit both the Governorate and the Municipality of Gabes to introduce the project of elaboration and implementation of the City Development Strategy, within the framework of the Medinatouna project, financed by Cities Alliance, in which MedCities participates as a partner.
These two meetings presented the process of implementation of the CDS, that will be elaborated simultaneously in nine Tunisian cities, including the city of Gabes. The objective of the project is improving the life quality of the citizens, the updating of the city, and also to present the role of the strategy to mobilise the necessary funds and create a sort of Public-Private Partnership (PPP).
MedCities and UNDP representatives introduced the different stages of the CDS (Diagnostic, Vision, Action plan, and Follow-up) as well as the importance of the role of the community as bearer of the project, especially in the decentralization process. The role of the community is also important at the level of coordination between the different actors of the city and the definition of the territory in order to achieve the intended economic, social and territorial development.
At the end of the meeting, the Governor expressed all his support for the implementation of this strategy in the light of its importance for the definition of the position of the city within the future territorial division.
