Within the framework of MedCities Climate Urban Capacity programme (MedCUC), the entire technical team of MedCities participated in a 3-day course on climate finance provided by trainers experienced in inclusive and sustainable development.

The objective of this training was to get an overview and understand the different financing options available to local public authorities at each stage of the development of their climate project, whether it be in the areas of waste, mobility, energy efficiency, or green and resilient cities.

The team went through an intensive training, studying various financing options ranging from grants, funding and technical assistance from national and multilateral institutions or Green Climate Funds, loans and guarantees, to innovative finance such as sustainable or green bonds, or event public-private partnerships, as well as alternative options like pooled procurement and project aggregation. It covered options available for all the stages of climate project preparation, from the origination and conceptualisation to the implementation, without forgetting feasibility, strategic planning, and project structuring and design. The training also detailed the common pitfalls and key barriers in accessing climate finance, such as poor creditworthiness, limited fiscal autonomy, poor data quality, or low technical capacity, and provided possible solutions to overcome them.

This training is but the first step of many to come to increase the capacities of MedCities’ technical team to provide better assistance to our members in the preparation of their climate project, especially to make them bankable and sustainable in the long run, and to become a fully fledge project preparation facility.

News about the new service portfolio developed under MedCUC will soon be published, stay tuned to know more about new opportunities for our members from the Middle East (Jordan, Lebanon, Palestine), North Africa (Libya, Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria) and Europe (Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Türkiye).
