The Municipality of Marseille will host the Mayor of Tangiers and a delegation of high officials and elected representatives next 10 to 14 Mai 2017.

The visit of Mr. Abdellaoui, Mayor of Tangiers and his delegation, is part of the rapprochement between the two cities to consolidate their cooperation. The numerous relations between the two cities during the last years (in the fields of economy, tourism, in port services, education, youth and sport…) shall constitute a real trampoline for the economic and touristic development of the two territories.

This cooperation between the cities of Tangiers and Marseille began back in 2007, by the signature of an agreement between the Agence d’Urbanisme de la Ville de Marseille (AGAM) and the Agence Urbaine de Développement de Tanger. It continued in 2009 with the mission led by Mr. Charles Milhaud, Chief executive officer for international economic relations, in order to analyze a new kind of “economic twinning”.

During this last three years the relations between Marseille and Tangiers have been intensified. On 8 August 2014, two cooperation agreements were signed by the Grand Port Maritime de Marseille (GPMM), l’Agence Nationale des Ports Marocains and l’Agence Spéciale Tanger Med. They provided in particular maritime lines for merchandise and passengers, between Marseille and the port of Tanger Med.

Mr. Roatta, Deputy Mayor of Marseille, has also visited Tangiers many times in official mission as part of the cooperation driven between the two cities, on the occasion of the Med Cop climat held on 22July  2016, where he met the new Mayor of Tangier, Mr. Mohamed El Bachir Abdellaoui, and also during the 4th Forum des autorités locales et régionales de la méditerranée, organized by the Mediterranean commission of the CGLU, on November 30 2016.

This visit includes:

1. The bilateral meeting between Mr. Senator Mayor JC Gaudin and the Mayor of Tangier at the Mayor’s office in the Palais du Pharo, to sign a letter of intent for cooperation.

2. Thematic meeting with stakeholders of the territory:

• Economic meeting on the theme of “Marseille –Tangier: Developing our companies and territories in a sustainable way“, with the General Consulate of Morocco in Marseille, the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Marseille Provence and Finances & Conseil Méditerranée
• Exchanges with Euroméditerranée et Provence Promotion then visit of the Smartseille Eiffage district and particpation at the 40 years of the GERES in the Mucem 
• Visit and exchanges on marine management with the direction of Ports de Marseille Provence Métropole, the Port of Marseille Fos, the Société des eaux de Marseille, the Direction de la mer, the Kedge Business school and the stadium orange vélodrome
